12/4/2006 - Code Shred
Code Shred offers off-site and on-site mobile shredding to individuals and businesses in New York, Westchester, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Sean Fredricks and one of Code Shred's three partners had both previously owned messenger service businesses they sold, and while looking to start a business together, they read an article by Norm Brodsky, a veteran entrepreneur, who recommended the shredding business and prompted the birth of Code Shred two years ago in Island Park, New York.
In New York City, Code Shred provides routine weekly or monthly pick-ups for businesses but also services individuals who look to shred their compiled documents rather than paying to store them.
The off-site option provides the customer with various size containers that are locked to secure the material inside. The containers are picked up and transferred locked to a Code Shred facility where they are shredded. A certificate of destruction is mailed to the customer after the shredding. Customers are also welcome to witness the destruction of their materials.
Is paying a shredding company better then you doing the shredding with your own shredder?
Fredricks suggests it is, although he says the main reason to why individuals or businesses choose to shred through an outside source is security. Most companies hire minimum wage employees to do the shredding, said Fredricks.
"That is confidential material. Do you really want that individual shredding it, and have they been background checked within the company?"
Code Shred charges a pickup fee of $25, regardless of quantity, and charges between $5 and $10 per banker's box. So if you've got two boxes, your total cost won't be more than $35.
"Every industry pretty much has something there that requires shredding," said Fredricks.
Various laws require secure disposal of customer information, like the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999. The act mandates that financial institutions must ensure the security and confidentiality of customer records, including secure storage and disposal.
And while you are calling Code Shred to take your history away, you are helping the environment since Code Shred in turn sells the shredded paper for recycling.
