Children at risk for ID theft, too
Diane Lade
12/7/2008 - 500,000 — Identity theft incidents involving children that occur every year, according to the Federal Trade Commission. That's about 5 percent of all suspected cases.

To protect your kids:

Don't carry your child's Social Security card with you. Resist giving out your child's number on sports, school or medical records unless absolutely necessary.

Ask that your child's student ID number and Social Security number be different.

Don't ask for annual credit reports on your child, as this opens a credit file and falsely suggests the child is an adult consumer.

For information: Identity Theft Resource Center: Call 858-693-7935 or go to idtheftcenter.org, and put Fact Sheet 120 in the search field. The Florida Attorney General's Office also takes complaints and offers consumer tips. Go to myfloridalegal.com/identitytheft. Or call 866-966-7226.
