4/16/2009 - The global economic situation has become a blame magnet, responsible for everything that is currently wrong with the world, and a new survey reveals that two-thirds of kiwis are convinced it is increasing the risk of identity theft.
In new data released by Unisys today, 67% of New Zealanders said they believed their personal risk level of identity theft and related crime would increase as a result of the global economic crisis, with an optimistic 3% believing it would decrease their level of risk.
The latest Unisys Security Index shows that New Zealanders saw a link between the security of their personal and financial information from fraud and troubling economic times.
There are increased levels of concern regarding computer security, unauthorised access to personal information, the security of online transactions and credit and debit card fraud.
Unisys New Zealand security spokesman Mike Webber says that regardless of the reality of actual risk, New Zealanders are seeking greater overt assurances that their private and personal information is securely protected against fraudulent and criminal activity.
Amongst the respondents, 14% said the risk of identity theft had greatly increased, while 54% said it had “somewhat increased".
More than a quarter (27%) said they believed there was no change.
It remains to be seen if the world economy is also responsible for all wars everywhere, the rubbish weather, or that weird pimple you found on your shoulder this morning.
